Chapter Eleven Climate Smart Agriculture, Food Security and Sustainable Development: Homegarden Agroforestry Perspective *Eric, E.E., ** Ejizu, A.N. and *Akpan, U.F.

Conclusion
Homegarden agroforestry substantiates an essential agro-ecological approach that
simultaneously supports biodiversity conservation, food security and climate change mitigation.
Globally, it offers a diverse range of products including food security, medicinal plants, and non-
timber forest products that augment rural livelihoods and socio-economic well-being. The
system enhances soil fertility through nutrient cycling and biological nitrogen fixation and
provides ecological services such as wind protection and carbon sequestration. Given the
mounting challenges of climate change and food insecurity, homegardens represent a
sustainable and adaptable agricultural practice critical for rural resilience. Their multifaceted
benefits underscore the need for greater integration into broader agricultural and
environmental policies. Hence, the need to integrate homegarden agroforestry into national and
regional climate-smart agriculture and sustainable development strategies to harness its
potential for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
